The Pre-Production Process

Media production
The type of media production that our group produced was a 90 second short film and it was made for a short film contest called Depict, we distributed the film by exporting the video into a you tube video.

Other moving media productions
A short film isn't the only media product around, there is also Feature films, Fact and fictional films and animation. With those moving media products comes distribution methods which are ; The internet which leads to you tube on which is one of the platforms you can watch moving media images on. Another platform is the cinema which allows us to see newly released media products on a massive screen which is good, the last platform is streaming content such as Netflix and Love film as you are able to watch moving media at anytime as long as you are connected to the internet.

Sources of funding
There are many sources you can get for funding your own movie or how directors are able to fund the movies they make. The first way to be able to gain money is Sponsorship, these people will give you money but expect some back when the movie makes money so its pretty much like a loan. The second way to obtain money is from friends and family, they will support your idea's and give you some money to help you on your way.
There are loads of ways to get money but one of the best is Crowd Funding, now crowd funding is were you post your idea's online and people send you money to help your idea get created and by far is the best way to gain money.

Requirements for any film
There is a short list of what money will be spent on;
Props - These are items used within your film. Example Swords, shields etc.
Location - You might want to use a certain location but be warned, it may be for a price.
Facilitates - You may need to hire a studio to voice over or narrate and that may cost money to hire.
Equipment - You may not have all the equipment you need so you may have to buy or hire any equipment you are missing.
Insurance - Damage to equipment or personnel and make sure to cover it.
Actors - You will need actors in your film for stars and you may want a professional, they may help you for free but sometimes they will ask to be paid  or be hired.
Personnel - Personnel is everyone on the project. Example Director, actor, cameraman etc.
Clearance - This is the word that lets you start filming, it is said only once all the paperwork is done. Example is that once the actors have filled in their forms and you have finished the risk easement , you can start filming.

Our Requirements
For our 90 second film we had to obtain some items for our film and they were not hard to get at all
we had to get
Six oranges
A juicer
A knife
Kitchen like area
Talent
Software

Typical team for a production in
A Low budget Short -
A typical low budget team that have not got that much money to spend of personnel so they  do all different tasks by themselves.

A television program -
A typical television program  team would be a team of just enough people to fit every job needed to be completed.

A Hollywood feature film - A typical Hollywood feature film would have a lot of people working on the project so they will have many people working on the same thing and it will be completed quickly.

Cast, not on camera

Cast is all of the members used to make a production in media, this contains actors but not only them. We also have the Cameraman, Scriptwriter, Editors. These off set people are what make the film as good as it comes out because they are like supports to a scaffolding without them the film would not be able to be viewed at all.

Time

The time frame we got given was 3 weeks and we were able to complete our depict entry with the time that we were given. If you work in a real industry or working media production than going over the deadline will cost the production money because they will need more time to release it causing profits to drop and sometimes even giving up on the media production and starting a completely new one.

Equipment

When shooting a media production you need the right equipment to be able to shoot and the equipment that you will need in a professional moving image production is a small list containing.
Camera
Tripod
Props - Fake guns, swords etc.
Editing equipment - Computers , software etc.
If you have this equipment that you will be able to create a moving image production

The equipment we had available to us was a camera and a tripod, these two items were the main equipment we needed to shoot our film otherwise it would have been never made.

Location

When you are shooting you may want a certain location so you would send a location recce to go and 'scout' where you are planning to film, they will take photo's to check with you if it is safe and to your liking.
For our video we had picked the collage staff room because it had a homey kitchen area that we could use to make it seem like somebodies house.
We had many risks at our location that were quite dangerous to us as we used a knife in our video meaning our talent could damage themselves while we are shooting but also had dangers of falling which would hurt our talent or anyone on set, we overcame the problems by filling out a risk assessment form to the correct standards.

Materials
There is a list of materials that you will need for a film including sounds ;
Soundtracks
Props
Sound effects
Crew
Equipment
Cast (Talent)

When you need financial (Money) considerations. What should you be careful for ?

You should be careful about how much money you spend , when making films you only have a certain budget to stick to so don't spend it all at once on one item!

Legal issues
When out filming the legal considerations of a film are quite strict, you have to make sure the police know your filming as an officer could walk past and see you with a weapon and arrest your talent but you also have to be careful with sounds effects as when you download a random sound from the internet you never know where its from so its copyright. Copyright is like stealing an old ladies bag... you'd never do it.

Clearance - Make sure you talk to who is the owner of the item you are copyrighting and attempt to get their permission before you start filming otherwise you will have some serious suing.

Public Insurance - Public insurance is to make sure the public don't complain to anyone about what your doing so wear bright crew shirts and notify the police on what you are doing.

Completion guarantee - This is basically the deadline of your project so it has to be complete on that date and time !

Regulations :

What is OFCOM ?
OFCOM makes sure that there is competition against other TV disturbers such as Sky and Virgin and BT and also makes sure that there are no scams going around on the television.

The BBC is regulated by Lord Patten  and is  BBC to entertain us and inform us about programmes and to entertain us with programmes they put on TV such as Eastenders or coronation street. They also inform us with the news and factual programmes.
Everyone who watches television has to have a tv licence which is payable to the BBC , the money goes towards improving different programmes suitable for all audiences and providing a constantly improving service for the licence payer. If you on't own a licence you will be prosecuted.

What is BBFC ?
This stands for the British board of film classification
What the BBFC does is exactly what PEGI does for video games, it decides the age rating of a film that is yet to be released in Britain and they suggest the age which is suitable for the film such as ; The hunger games is a twelve because of the violence but is not a higher age because there is no swearing or drug consumption.
The U stands for universal age meaning everybody can watch it.

There is a minor difference between a 12 film and a 12 A film, the difference is that a twelve film you can by yourself while a twelve A means you will have to have an adult or guardian over 18 with you.
Its pretty much the same pattern with 15 and 18 movies, you have to be that age to go and see it.

Trade union
Trade union is a group to which a group of workers can subscribe to.
The trade union will fight on behalf of the workers for better pay, better working conditions and unfair situation which may arise in work. A good example of this is when you see people out on strike to demand better pay and this is normally organised by the trade union to gain awareness of their plight.

PACT represents the UK's media industry but promoting independent films and animations etc.
They offer support for members in legal and business affairs as well as working with government organisations to help negotiate other business terms with UK and European buyers.
They also help their members with the financial side such as obtaining finance through these contacts.

BECTU is the trade union for the UK's entertainment and media section, it represents staff and workers who are based in the UK.
As it is a trade union it helps its members negotiate pay, better working conditions and fair rates, offering personal help and advice plus health and safety advice too. Another thing that BECTU does is help to protect pensions of all workers.

  1. This is unfinished Sam, and therefore not yet at pass level. You URGENTLY need to get this completed.

  2. Now finished at Pass level. Merit needs more coverage and more examples - eg on financing - other methods of financing film or tv production, and examples of particular films or other products and how they were financed.
